Most of the major reputable retailers are still selling this for close to $3,000. This model sits just below Denon’s top of the line AVR-5308CI, which sells for $5,500. The AVR-4810CI boasts “multi-mono block amp construction” with nine separate channels rated at 140 watts each. Channels can be configured in almost every way possible, from the most complex surround setup or 4 separate stereo zones, and everything in between. It has two separate radio tuners for multi-zone use, including HD radio and Sirius/XM compatibility. It’s also network connected (via built-in Wi Fi or ethernet) for access to internet radio and other digital sources. The reviews from Sound+Vision, Home Theater Magazine, and Home Entertainment Magazine, are all excellent. If you’re in the market for a top notch A/V receiver, this is worth checking out.

That beats my last mention of this product by almost $200, and is at least $175 better than anywhere else. This model received good marks (8.5/10) in a review from digitaltrends. It also received positive comments in a review by Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity. This model falls at the upper end of Denon’s mid-line of home theater receivers, and includes support for all current audio formats and video resolutions. It comes with two remotes for use in separate zones, includes HD radio, and has an ethernet connection for streaming internet radio or other music services (Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, etc.). Cos Cob TV & Audio (via Amazon) has the Denon ADV-M71 Integrated Progressive-Scan DVD Player and 2.1-Channel Amplifier for $399.99 $299.99 $249.99 plus $10.49 shipping and handling. It’s the only place I could find a new in box (i.e., not refurbished) version of this now discontinued model. This unit sold for $599 when it was introduced circa 2003. It received an excellent review from Gramophone at the time. No blu-ray capability, but this would make a nice office or bedroom system paired with some good bookshelf speakers (perhaps the Jamo C401 2-way cherry color Concert series bookshelf speaker pair which are still selling for $79.88 with free S&H).

 Amazon.com has the Denon RCDCX1 CD/Super Audio CD Receiver for $1,288.16 with free shipping and handling (down another $32 since last week). That’s the lowest price I could find by over $200. Denon seems to keep a tight rein on dealers, so its prices (particularly on the higher end items) are rarely discounted. It’s also $1,100 less than buying the functionally equivalent Denon separates on which this unit is based: the Denon DRA-CX3 Audiophile Stereo AM/FM Tuner/Amplifier currently sells for $1,199 on Amazon, and the Denon DCD-CX3 CD/Super Audio CD Player sells for $1,199 on Amazon. It received praise in this article in Stereophile. Although a combo unit such as this might turn off audiophile purists, the upside is it eliminates the need for a [potentially pricey] pair of interconnects, and is much less obtrusive than multiple components. Paired with some nice speakers, this would make a great system for someone who doesn’t want to agonize over the details of choosing separate components, but wants high end build quality.

B&H Photo Video has the Denon DRA-397P – XM-Ready Multi-Zone AM/FM Receiver for $359.95 with free shipping and handling. This is the “professional” version of the DRA-397 (hence the “P” at the end of the model number). Except for the “professional” designation, the receiver is identical to the “home” model. I couldn’t find the more commonly available “home” version for less than $399 — saving you at least $39. I’ve had a Denon receiver (similar in specs to this one) for 24 years — it still works great.
