Creative Labs (via Amazon) has the Creative ZEN X-Fi – Digital player / radio – flash 8 GB – WMA, AAC, MP3 – video playback – display: 2.5 for $69.99 with free shipping and handling (the 16GB and 32GB models are available through the same link for $99.99 and $149.99, respectively). Those match or beat the best prices seen previously for these models (barring refurbished units). These come with nicer earphones than most mp3 players (the EP-830 – usually over $40 alone). I have a Zen V Plus and my wife uses a Zen Mozaic — both sound great. Check out the review from Cnet for more information on this particular model.

Amazon still has the Creative Zen Mozaic 16 GB MP3 Player (Black) for $69.99 with free shipping and handling. That’s the lowest price available by at least $10, and the lowest I’ve seen for a 16gb Creative player. Check out the review from What Hi Fi? for more information — my wife has this model and I can attest to the fact that sound quality and user interface are excellent.

Creative Labs (via Amazon) has the Creative GigaWorks T20 Series II 2.0 Speaker – Refurbished for $49.99 with free shipping and handling. That’s at least 50% below the price for a new, sealed-box unit. This speaker set forgoes a subwoofer in favor of a two-way design (many computer speakers omit a tweeter and use only a “full range” driver). These have received favorable reviews from IGN, Guitar Stuff, and Trusted Reviews, among others.

Amazon.com has the Creative Zen 32 GB Portable Media Player (Black) for $129.99 with free S&H. I have a Zen V Plus and my wife has a Zen Mozaic — both of them sound great. Cnet.com has a good review of it from 2007 — when it cost $299.99. Cnet said “We’re hard-pressed to find anything not to like about the Creative Zen. It’s a great option for anyone looking for a great-sounding, pocketable MP3 player with an excellent, video-capable screen and plenty of extra features.” At this price, for this amount of storage, it’s a pretty sweet deal.

Since last updating this post back in January, the price for the Creative Labs Xmod Wireless Music System with X-Fi Technology (via various vendors through Amazon Marketplace) has dropped from $44.38 to $36.06 with free shipping and handling. The wireless functionality on this unit gets mixed reviews (people either love it or hate it). However, aside from the wireless functionality (and even if the receiver was discarded entirely), the “transmitter” is essentially an external usb dac, at a price far below just about any comparable product (when introduced, it retailed for $200, and I wouldn’t purchase at that price point, but now that it’s under $50 $40, it deserves a serious look). It has a 3.5mm line out + headphone jack, integrated volume control, an additional input via rca jacks in the back. There’s an excellent article at VR-zone.com written by some folks who broke one of these open — there are two Wolfson WM8728′s (stereo DAC with a sampling frequency of up to 192kHz and a SNR of 106dB). Transmitter also contains a AKM 5357 (24bit/96kHz capable stereo low-powered ADC). For those of you in the market for a usb dac, the HRT Music Streamer+ I wrote about in January is also still available.
