OneCall has a few models of the Boston Acoustics VR series speakers (all discontinued) for sale at excellent prices: the Boston Acoustics VR3 Black (Ea) is available for $247.97 each ($495.94 per pair) plus shipping starting at $61.60 each or $117.50 per pair. Even with shipping, that’s still a discount of almost 50% per pair. The VR3 is a three-way floorstanding speaker with dual 7-inch woofers (and a former flagship model for Boston Acoustics). The VR3 has a nominal impedence of 8 ohms and sensitivity of 93db – meaning that they should be easy to drive with almost any half-decent amplifier or receiver. Home Theater Magazine reviewed the VR3 in 2005 (as part of a Boston Acoustics surround package). Included in that same review was the Boston Acoustics VRC Black, a center channel speaker which matches the VR3, which OneCall has for $179.88 (a drop of $20 since early April) plus shipping starting at $21.95. Even with shipping, that’s still almost 45% off MSRP. The step-down Boston Acoustics VR1 Black (Ea) (a two-way floorstanding speaker) is also available for $149.88 each ($299.76 per pair) with shipping starting at $25.20 each or $44.70 per pair (even with shipping, a drop of $35 since early April). All are the lowest prices available.

Starting tonight at 10pm Eastern (7pm Pacific) and continuing through May 2, OneCall is lowering its price on the Boston Acoustics HS 460 Midnight (Ea) 2-Way Floorstanding Loudspeaker to $169.77 each ($339.54 per pair) with free shipping and handling (they will also be available in Mist for the same price). That’s a drop of $60 per pair for the Midnight finish, and $20 per pair for the Mist finish. Prior to being discontinued, these retailed for $499.99 each ($999.98 per pair). There’s a nice write-up on these at Sound+Vision. Describing these speakers, the reviewer noted: “Unusual in that it incorporates both a port and a couple of passive radiators in addition to a pair of 6.5-inch woofers, the 460 reaches deep enough to be used by itself in a music system without the support of a subwoofer.” The review concluded:
While most trendy, style-conscious audio gear puts the emphasis on form over function, Boston Acoustics has used its decades of creating high-value speakers to put performance back into the equation. The unfussy nature and comfortable sound of the Horizon series, while not a full-tilt high-end solution, should appeal not only to value-conscious audiophiles but also to many first-timers who might otherwise be listening through a pair of iPod earbuds.

Newegg.com has the Boston Acoustics Horizon Duo AM/FM Stereo Radio w/ iPod Dock Bundle (Mist) for $99.99 with free shipping and handling. This model is now discontinued, but with the bundled iPod dock (not originally included), it is functionally equivalent to the “new” Horizon Duo-i (which has the dock built-in to the top of the unit). Check out the review by Cnet of the new model for an idea of what to expect. I almost bought one of these last year (when they were selling for $150 without the iPod dock), and read most of the user reviews available at that time — you can still check out the customer reviews at Amazon . Although not uniformly positive, some of the better written reviews are quite strong in recommending it based on sound quality.
