Amazon.com has the Harman Kardon HK 3390 2 x 80W Stereo Receiver for $228.99 with free shipping and handling. That beats my last mention of this product by $10 (back in early February). This is a nice entry level stereo receiver with a few features not found on competing products like front inputs and subwoofer connections. It also has a phono input for those of you still listening to your vinyl collections. This is as nice or nicer than competing models by denon or onkyo (I own receivers made by all three companies). If you’re looking for a receiver around which to build a system, you could do a lot worse…and at this price you’ll still be able to pay for those speakers you’ve been lusting after. The PSB Alpha B1′s I wrote about in an earlier post would be a nice match with this receiver.

Outlaw Audio (via Amazon) is the only place (other than direct from Outlaw Audio’s web site) that you can buy the Outlaw Audio RR2150 Stereo Receiver. While it’s not discounted per se, it offers a tremendous amount of value at its price of $699 plus $40.49 shipping and handling, and I felt it deserved a mention among the “bargains” I usually try to feature on this site (though one way to take a bite out of the price is to trade in your spare change for an Amazon gift certificate — you can get them from select Coinstar machines and there is no counting fee when converting change to gift certificates). This receiver has a high-end phono input which can handle moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, a subwoofer output with selectable analog bass management, a front panel mini-jack for connecting MP3 players, and a USB input for direct connection to your PC. It also provides enough clean power to drive almost any speaker. Take a look at the reviews from Stereophile, GoodSound, Enjoy the Music, and HomeTheaterReview.com (you’ll note that the price has risen since the older reviews). It is almost an understatement to say that the reviews are glowing. The one customer review at Amazon (five stars) also takes the cake for best caption/title.

J&R Music World has the ONKYO CD/Radio 1-Disc Changer Mini Audio System CS-325 for $199 with free shipping and handling. That’s a savings of at least $15 off the next best price I could find online (and beats my last mention of this product in February by $1) . It hasn’t been below $200 since Newegg sold out a couple months ago. Check out the review at Hi Fi Reviews for more info (or the review at Electronics Made Easy). If you are looking for a small system for your bedroom, office, dorm room, etc., this gives a lot of bang for the buck.

J&R Music World has the Harmon Kardon HK 3490 2 x 120W Stereo Receiver for $299 with free shipping and handling. That’s the lowest price available anywhere, and the lowest I’ve ever seen for this model by $5 (after factoring in shipping). This is a high quality amp capable of driving most speakers and has all the bells and whistles you could ask for in a non-surround receiver. It offers 120 watts per channel (vs 80 watts per channel for the step down HK3390 — which is still a great receiver). Along with more power, the primary upgrade is the addition of digital inputs and digital signal processing (stereo only — not surround).

Amazon has the Onkyo TX-8555 Stereo Receiver for $229.95 with free shipping and handling. That’s a drop of $15 since last month. the TX-8555 has some nice features (at a price about $400 less than a comparable Onkyo receiver would have sold for in 1986 – my reference point because it was when I bought my first nice receiver). It has 2-zone capability, subwoofer out, Sirius and XM ready, a phono input for connecting a turntable, and puts out 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms. The customer reviews on Amazon will also give you a good idea of this receiver’s capabilities (it’s one of the best rated electronic products on Amazon).

Spearit Sound (via Amazon) has the NAD – C-725BEE – Stereo Receiver (refurbished) for $599 with free shipping and handling. That’s $200 less than the best price I could find for a new, sealed-box unit. (Note: if you wish to connect a turntable to this receiver, you’ll need a phono preamp like the NAD PP-2 Phono Preamplifier.) There are some enthusiastic reviews of this 2-channel receiver at TechRadar, Sound+Vision, and Home Theater Review. Here’s how the reporter at Home Theater Review concluded his review:
The $799 NAD C 725BEE was comfortable with every type of music I could throw at it, sounding better than any receiver should, especially at this price point. It was powerful yet refined, like a megabuck high-end stack of equipment without all the fuss and pretensions. It’s designed with the environment in mind and by people who understand music and know how to reproduce it properly. If you are a music lover and looking for a receiver with the heart of separates, the NAD C 725BEE may be just what you are seeking. It’s hard to imagine anybody doing a music-only receiver better at the price.

Spearit Sound (via Amazon) has the NAD Viso Two Stereo DVD/CD Receiver (refurbished) for $899 with free shipping and handling. That’s $400 below the price for a new, sealed-box unit. The Viso Two is a combination stereo receiver and cd/dvd player (similar to the Viso Five, but without surround sound). This model received a 5-star review from What Hi Fi? You can read more about it (and find specifications and additional images) at the NAD website.

ListenUp (via Amazon) has the Denon DRA-CX3 Audiophile Stereo AM/FM Tuner/Amplifier for $579 with free shipping and handling. That’s the best price I’ve ever seen on this receiver (and the first time I’ve seen it discounted at all). Check out the review at The Absolute Sound for more information on this model.

Electronics-Expo has the Harmon Kardon HK 3490 2 x 120W Stereo Receiver for $275 plus $29.99 for shipping and handling (after coupon “LSDA0524F”) (coupon expires 6/4/10) (coupon will apply at checkout even if the lower price is not immediately reflected in the shopping cart). Even with shipping, that’s the lowest price available anywhere by at least $30, and the lowest I’ve even seen for this model.

Cos Cob TV & Audio (via Amazon) has the Denon ADV-M71 Integrated Progressive-Scan DVD Player and 2.1-Channel Amplifier for $399.99 $299.99 $249.99 plus $10.49 shipping and handling. It’s the only place I could find a new in box (i.e., not refurbished) version of this now discontinued model. This unit sold for $599 when it was introduced circa 2003. It received an excellent review from Gramophone at the time. No blu-ray capability, but this would make a nice office or bedroom system paired with some good bookshelf speakers (perhaps the Jamo C401 2-way cherry color Concert series bookshelf speaker pair which are still selling for $79.88 with free S&H).

Amazon.com has the Denon RCDCX1 CD/Super Audio CD Receiver for $1,288.16 with free shipping and handling (down another $32 since last week). That’s the lowest price I could find by over $200. Denon seems to keep a tight rein on dealers, so its prices (particularly on the higher end items) are rarely discounted. It’s also $1,100 less than buying the functionally equivalent Denon separates on which this unit is based: the Denon DRA-CX3 Audiophile Stereo AM/FM Tuner/Amplifier currently sells for $1,199 on Amazon, and the Denon DCD-CX3 CD/Super Audio CD Player sells for $1,199 on Amazon. It received praise in this article in Stereophile. Although a combo unit such as this might turn off audiophile purists, the upside is it eliminates the need for a [potentially pricey] pair of interconnects, and is much less obtrusive than multiple components. Paired with some nice speakers, this would make a great system for someone who doesn’t want to agonize over the details of choosing separate components, but wants high end build quality.

For those of you who don’t have easy access to a Pioneer Elite dealer, I’ve found one online vendor that sells their higher end audio line: United Online Shopping. While there’s a good chance these are grey market products, this merchant has gotten good reviews from resellerratings (hence my willingness to mention them here). Worth checking out is the Pioneer Elite SX-A6-J Audio Receiver, available for $414.99. The similar A-A6 Integrated Amplifier (which lacks the am/fm tuner component) received 5 stars from What Hi Fi? If anyone has had experience with this vendor, let me know.

Etronics.com has the Yamaha RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver for $376.06 with free shipping and handling. That’s a drop of about $10 since I last updated this product listing in late February and still the best price I could find for a new, sealed box unit at an acceptable retailer. Most are selling this receiver for $499+. It’s Yamaha’s top of the line stereo receiver – you can find a more thorough explanation of Yamaha’s product line in this video from Crutchfield.

OneCall has the Denon DRA-397 XM Ready Stereo Receiver for $338.30 with free shipping and handling (with coupon “CALL4DEAL”)(Coupon expires April 5, 2010 11:59pm PST). That’s at least $20 better than from any other reputable retailer. This model comes with two remotes (for main and second zones), is rated at 80 watts per channel, and has a subwoofer out connection. I’ve had a similar Denon stereo receiver for 24 years, and it still sounds great. UPDATE: Two other Denon stereo receivers are eligible for this coupon, resulting in lowest available prices for each. The top of the line Denon DRA-697CIHD AM/FM/HD Radio Multi-Zone Stereo Receiver is available for $719.19 with free S&H. That’s almost $180 lower than anywhere else. It adds additional power and an HD radio tuner. Also available is the entry level Denon DRA-297 AM/FM/XM Ready Stereo Receiver for $254.14 with free S&H. Though not quite as low as a deal from PC Rush a month ago (since sold out), it is the lowest currently available by over $40.

Amazon.com has the Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver for $169.99 with free shipping and handling. That’s a $25 price drop since January, and the lowest I’ve seen it in the last three months by at least $10. I have an earlier model of this same receiver, and have found the sound quality to be comparable my higher end receivers by Denon and Harman Kardon. It has a phono input for those who want to add a turntable and sufficient power to handle most speakers.

Home Theater Store (via Amazon Marketplace) Amazon.com has the Denon DRA-297 AM/FM Satellite-Ready Stereo Receiver for $264 with free shipping and handling. That’s the best price I’ve seen for a new, sealed-box unit by $35 dollars, and the first time I’ve seen it on sale this year.

Accessories4less.com (via Amazon Marketplace) has the Marantz SR4023 Stereo Receiver (refurbished) for $359.99 plus $17.49 for shipping and handling. That’s $20 under the best price I could find for an open-box unit, and $120 less than I could find for a new, sealed-box unit. Note that this is a stereo (not surround sound) receiver — it is nominally rated at 80 watts/channel into 8-ohms, and 100 watts/channel into 4-ohms.

There seem to be a fair number of people out there seeking advice on how to get started with building their first stereo system. Confronted with a seemingly endless selection of electronic components, sources, and speakers, they’re not sure where to begin. I will be posting some suggested setups at different price points — starting with this post trying to put together a system for under $500 (including cables). Audio is one of those areas where you can always spend more, and in most cases, the incremental increase in cost will be accompanied by an incremental increase in sound quality (though not always). As I put together these proposed combinations, I will use the following guidelines whenever possible: (1) the ability to purchase from a single retailer; (2) best total cost; and (3) matching components (at least on the lower end systems — more for aesthetics than any perceived synergy achieved by using the same brand). That said, here’s the sub-$500 setup:
Receiver: The Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver for $194.00 with free shipping and handling from Amazon.com. I have an earlier model of this same receiver, and have found the sound quality to be comparable my higher end receivers by Denon and Harman Kardon.
Speakers: The Polk Audio RTi4 High Performance Bookshelf/On-Wall Speakers (Pair, Black) are still available from J&R through Amazon for $149.99 with free shipping and handling. I wrote about these last week and they are still available. (NO LONGER AVAILABLE AT THIS PRICE 2/23/10)
CD/DVD Player: The Onkyo DV-SP406B Single Disc DVD Player (Black) is available from Amazon for $121.82 with free shipping and handling. This is a fairly entry level player, and won’t play blu-rays or Super Audio CD (SACD), but sound quality should be more than adequate with this system.
Speaker Cables: Monster Cable THX SP 16-50 Standard THX-Certified Speaker Cable (50 Feet) is $23.41 with free shipping and handling at Amazon.com. Nothing special about this cable. Good quality. At this price, no banana connectors (just bare wire), but this will do the job.
Interconnect cables: Not much left to spend, but you can get the Phoenix Gold Audio Signal Cable 1 Meter for $8.98 with free shipping and handling from Amazon. Or you can save $9 and use the interconnect included with the DVD/CD player.
GRAND TOTAL: $498.20
Next up, a $1,000 system.
