Hi Fi Audio Deals Exclusive — SAVE $20 on prebuilt VortexBox at Amazon – VortexBox Open Source CD Ripper/Jukebox operating system – free

As an exclusive bargain for Hi Fi Audio Deals readers, through the end of May, Vortexbox is offering $20 off its VortexBox 1TB Automatic CD ripping NAS at Amazon with coupon code “HIFIDEAL”, resulting in a price of $359 plus $9.99 shipping and handling.

[earlier post:]
The ability to stream files via Sonos, Squeezebox, networked receivers, etc. is fantastic — but none of the aforementioned devices actually provide storage for your music collection. Enter VortexBox — an open source Linux distribution that you can install on an old pc and get a fully functional NAS Jukebox Server – with automated CD ripping (in pretty much whatever format you want). Best of all – it doesn’t cost anything to download or install. They’ve designed it to work with the Squeezebox and Sonos music streamers, and it should work with others as well. Check out vortexbox.org for more information on this clever product. For those of you who lack the inclination to try and build/install a system like this on your own, they are also selling a pre-installed version on a low-power platform with 1TB of storage for $379 + $9.99 for shipping and handling. For those of you with gift certificates/points it’s also available on Amazon for the same price.

UPDATE – ADDTIONAL $10 OFF WITH COUPON: Logitech Squeezebox Boom $196.50 plus $7.99 S&H at Electronics Expo (with coupon “EDEALINFO”))

Since my last update on this product in mid-February, the price on the Logitech Squeezebox Boom All-in-One Network Music Player / Wi-Fi Internet Radioicon has gone down by almost $30 to $196.50 plus $7.99 shipping and handling at Electronics Expo (with coupon “EDEALINFO”). This is a cnet Editor’s Choice product. Cnet described it as “the best all-in-one tabletop Wi-Fi radio we’ve seen to date.” It streams internet radio from a multitude of sources and can access music files stored on your computer via wi fi (some software installation required). Some services (like Sirius) require that you have a subscription, but the vast majority are free to access (including Pandora and Slacker, provided you don’t want to upgrade to the commercial-free service). A remote control is included.

Hewlett Packard Z558 Windows Media Center for $281.03 with free S&H at 6ave.com (with coupon "BONUSBUY")

6ave.com has the Hewlett Packard Z558 Windows Media Center for $281.03 with free shipping and handling (with coupon “BONUSBUY”). This discontinued product originally retailed for $2,199, and the only other vendor still listing it for sale has a price on it over $800. Note that this is technology from circa 2006 — no hdmi and processor isn’t anything like you would find in a system today (definitely not state of the art for 2010). That said, it can work as a dvr, music streamer, dvd burner, has 600 gb of storage, wi fi, trackball remote and wireless keyboard. The case is pretty slick too (modders out there could probably swap out the motherboard to improve processing power and RAM). At this price, it might be a fun toy to add to a second system.

Sonos 250 Wireless Multi-Room Music System (Bundle) for $939.06 with free S&H at 6ave.com (with coupon “BONUSBUY”)

6ave.com has the most up to date version Sonos 250 Wireless Multi-Room Music System (Bundle) for $939.06 with free shipping and handling (with coupon code “BONUSBUY”). That’s $60 under the next lowest price I could find for this recently released and highly rated music streaming system. It’s a Cnet editor’s choice product. While not as crazy a deal as my last Sonos post (which sold out by the same day I posted it), it’s still the best deal out there at the moment.

Add coupon code “3A171″ to receive another $20 off, for a total shipped price of $130.98. That’s the best price I could find by $20+. This is a popular item that offers streaming of internet radio, access to the music on your PC and other features.

SOLD OUT: Sonos BU130 Digital Music System Bundle for $668.22 plus $29.99 S&H from Electronics Expo (via Amazon)

Electronics Expo (via Amazon) has the Sonos BU130 Digital Music System Bundle for a bargain price of $668.22 plus $29.99 for shipping and handling. Even with shipping, that’s the best price I’ve seen for this bundle by over $150. This is the prior generation model (the remote has been updated in the new version), but sound quality and functionality has not changed. The newer model is at least $240 more than this price. There aren’t many left and I expect they’ll sell out quickly at this price.

Logitech.com has the Squeezebox™ Touch Network Music Player available for pre-order at the super low price of $229.49 with free shipping and handling (after application of coupons “MIR15″ and “64ie3rfmo”). While this hasn’t been released yet, other vendors are offering it for pre-order at the retail price of $299.99. That’s a savings of $70 versus buying it anywhere else. Cnet offers an editor’s take on this yet to be released model.

Logitech Transporter Network Music Player for $1,529.99 with free S&H from Logitech.com (after coupons “MIR15″ and “64ie3rfmo”)

Logitech has the Transporter® Network Music Player, normally $1,999.99, for $1,529.99 with free shipping and handling (after application of coupons “MIR15″ and “64ie3rfmo”). Although not as good a deal as the Squeezebox Duet listed earlier today, that’s still $250 better than I could find it anyplace else. The Transporter is Logitech’s top of the line music streamer. Check out the review from Stereophile (before it was branded as a “Logitech” item).

SOLD OUT: Logitech Squeezebox™ Duet – Dented Box for $186.99 with free S&H from Logitech.com (after coupons "woot_30110" and "MIR15")

Logitech has the Squeezebox™ Duet – Dented Box for a low $229.49 $186.99 with free shipping and handling (use coupons “woot_30110″ and “MIR15″ to see this price). That’s at least $100 $140 better than the best price I could find for a “non-dented” box unit. According to Logitech: “Dented Box items from Logitech are products whose outer box has been torn, scratched, dented, or has other markings on it. The product itself is guaranteed to be in brand new condition and fully warranted.” This is a Cnet Editor’s Choice product. I suspect it will sell out quickly at this price.

ORIGINALLY POSTED 2/12/10; SOLD OUT AS OF 2/17/10; BACK IN STOCK 3/1/10; SOLD OUT (AGAIN) 3/1/10

According to Logitech: “Dented Box items from Logitech are products whose outer box has been torn, scratched, dented, or has other markings on it. The product itself is guaranteed to be in brand new condition and fully warranted.” This was rated “Excellent” in a 2006 review by Cnet.
