Amazon has the AudioQuest RCA Male-to-Male Preamp Jumpers (2pk) for $25 with free shipping and handling (they can also be ordered from OneCall via Amazon for 50 cents less, but they appear to be $29 on the OneCall website). Most vendors are selling these for $29 plus shipping. This is an easy tweak which you can read about in the customer reviews and comments (all of which seem positive). The idea is to replace the low-grade metal U prong that connects the pre-in and pre-out connectors on the back of your preamplifier, receiver, or integrated amplifier. Since essentially all sources must ultimately pass through those loops, low quality connections will degrade performance. [note: these are way too short to work at system interconnects -- they are intended only for use in replacing the existing U pins in the pre-in/pre-out section.]
NOTE – I’ve been taken to task by a reader for listing this product (see comments for this post) – I must concede that there is substantial controversy as to whether this (or any other cable, for that matter) will actually make a difference in sound quality. From a purely scientific perspective, blind tests should be the best way to figure out whether there is a difference (though there is even disagreement on that – see this editorial at avguide.com and the extensive comments following it, as well as this response at GoodSound!). Most products touted by the hi fi industry are premised upon the idea that [some] people can distinguish between “good” and “bad” equipment, cables, sources, etc. Many people may not be able to hear such differences. Others may perceive huge differences. It’s difficult to demo equipment sold online (some readers may have access to local dealers who will let them listen to equipment side by side). If you can’t listen beforehand, the best advice is to try and buy from a reputable retailer with a decent return policy. If this product was $1,000 instead of $25, I wouldn’t have listed it. For $25, and given the reviews, I thought I’d list it. That said, I encourage all readers to let me know if they think that a product isn’t worthwhile. I have and will continue to update listings based on reader feedback.

OneCall has the AudioQuest CF-UST/S Silver (2 pr) Standard Banana Plugs for $18.99 with free shipping and handling. Each package contains 2 pairs of plugs (half black/half red) (enough to connect one speaker). That’s the best price I’ve seen by at least $7 per package (that difference can add up quickly – a 7.2 system would require at least 7 of these packs; a 5.1 system would require at least 5 packs). Stereo listeners who only have two speakers to connect only need to buy 2 packs (unless you are bi-wiring or bi-amping). AudioQuest makes high quality cables, and these plugs include a wrench to tighten the connections. They can accommodate up to 9 gauge (9 AWG) wire (if you’ve tried connecting 10 or even 12 gauge wire without connectors, you know how hard it can be to get a clean fit between the bare wire and binding post). I used bare wire for 20 years, picked up some banana plugs on a whim, and haven’t gone back since. It vastly speeds up the setup process and makes it much easier to untangle cables and other cords (it’s especially nice for people who move their system frequently, like college students). If you already have nice unterminated cables, adding plugs like these will reduce frustration and should also result in a more consistent connection. OneCall has a couple nice user reviews posted on this product and agree with one who noted that the silver connectors are an improvement over the prior gold and copper versions [note that "gold" connectors are still available, at either a high price or without free shipping].

I’ve been shopping for audio interconnect cables for a while (I’m always scrounging for cables every time I need to hook up some new piece of equipment), and these appear to be among the better values out there. Pro Cables Direct (via Amazon Marketplace) has the Acoustic Research PR130 Audio Cable, Gold RCA P – RCA P (3 feet) for $10.96 and the Acoustic Research PR131 Audio Cable, Gold RCA P – RCA P (6 feet) for $12.95 . Shipping starts at $3.99 for the first item, $0.50 for each additional item (i.e., shipping for four items would be $3.99 + $1.50 = $5.49). Many other vendors charge the “base shipping rate” for each item – which can add up quickly. These have oxygen free copper conductors and silver soldered internal connections. User reviews are positive.

AudioAdvisor (via Amazon Marketplace) has the AudioQuest HDMI 1 cable – HDMI plugs 2m (6.56′) braided cable for $75. It normally retails for $225, and the next lowest price is $55 higher. AudioAdvisor also has the AudioQuest HDMI 1 cable – HDMI plugs 3m (9.84′) braided cable for $90 (normally $275, next lowest price is $23 higher). I’m the last person who would suggest that you need a pricey HDMI cable for good performance — even the cheapest have been shown to perform well. But if you’ve dropped a couple grand on a new HDTV, and want a nice looking cable to go with it, you won’t find a better deal than this.

Buy.com has the Xitel Ground Loop Isolator (Home version) for $31.75 with free shipping and handling (2nd day express shipping is available for $5.49). That’s the lowest price (including shipping) I could find for this unit by at least a buck. If you are experiencing problems with hum when you try to connect your computer to your home stereo, a device like this can help. Check out the reviews at Newegg.com for more information (Newegg does not have this item in stock).

Puget Sound Depot (via Amazon Marketplace) has the Monster Ultra Series THX 1000 Speaker Cable with Monster Tips 15 ft. pair Speaker Cable (ULT S1000MT-15/15) for $44 plus $6.49 shipping and handling. That’s the lowest price I could find anywhere for this discontinued product, which originally retailed for $129.95. The markup on cables is always horrendous, so a discount of this magnitude is pretty rare. I like that these are pre-terminated with banana plugs and the reviewers praise their solid construction. I used bare wire for 20 years, picked up some banana plugs on a whim, and haven’t gone back since. It vastly speeds up the setup process and makes it much easier to untangle cables and other cords (it’s especially nice for people who move their system frequently, like college students). You could easily spend $20+ just buying some nice banana plugs — the cost to assemble a similar quality cable on your own with bare wire and screw on plugs would likely exceed the price charged for this pair of cables.

I’ve wanted to build a system around the Epos ELS8 speakers for some time. They (and their predecessors) have been highly regarded for many years, often earning kudos as the best speaker out there for under $500. These run for $495 just about anywhere they’re sold (boutique audio shops). I’ve decided to build the system with components from AudioAdvisor.com because their prices on the rest of the system are reasonable and they stock components on the lower end of the audiophile scale (read: cheaper models). If I could build any system right now for a private listening space somewhere in the house, this would be it. Speakers: The Epos ELS8 in black cost $495 at AudioAdvisor.com. There is a glowing (and extensive) review of the ELS8 at the absolute sound from September 30, 2009.
Speaker stands: Target – HS Series Speaker Stands – Pair (24″) can be filled with sand or lead shot to improve stability. Currently priced at $189 at AudioAdvisor.com.
Amp: The NAD C-315BEE amplifier runs $349 at Audioadvisor.com. NAD makes available an extensive review of this model (in pdf format) conducted by Britains’s www.hifinews.co.uk.
CD Player: The matching NAD 515CEEE cd player runs $299 at AudioAdvisor. Rated 5 stars by the UK’s What Hi Fi?
Cables: Audioquest Type 4 speaker cable (no frills version), is available in multiple lengths at AudioAdvisor.com. I’ve selected this 10 ft pair which is going for $119.
For the interconnects to hook the cd player to the amp, try the Audioquest G-Snake, also available in multiple lengths. A 1 meter (3ft) pair is $39 at AudioAdvisor.com.
TOTAL PRICE: $1,490

For those of you with $1,000 to drop on a new system, I’ve tried to put together something a little more exotic:
Speakers: PSB Alpha B1 bookshelf speakers (in black), which are going for $279 with free shipping at AudioAdvisor.com (they are also offered in a wood-tone “Sienna“). These speakers been rated very highly by Stereophile and others. My favorite quote from the review: “Considering its price, the PSB Alpha B1 is quite extraordinary in its way. Even if not in the market for a cheap mini, audiophiles should buy them for their Bose-owning friends and family, to give those unfortunates more than a taste of what a true high-end loudspeaker is capable of.” They were a Stereophile “Budget Product of the Year” in 2007.
Components: I’ve gone with a pairing of an integrated amplifer and dvd player from Cambridge Audio. The Cambridge Audio Azur 340A integrated amplifier (in silver) is available for $269 at AudioAdvisor.com and should drive the PSB Alpha B1′s without problem (couldn’t find the amp for less than $329 elsewhere).
For aesthetic purposes, I’ve paired it with the Cambridge Audio DVD-89 player (also in silver) on sale (43% off) for $199 at AudioAdvisor.com.
Speaker Stands: Stands are highly recommended for bookshelf speakers — the goal is to place the tweeters at ear level (when seated). To stay within the budget, I’ve picked these Sanus Euro Speaker Stands (24″), which are $69.99 at AudioAdvisor.com. Heavier stands (which can be filled with sand or lead shot) would be preferable if you have a few more bucks to spend.
Total Cost: $974.99.

There seem to be a fair number of people out there seeking advice on how to get started with building their first stereo system. Confronted with a seemingly endless selection of electronic components, sources, and speakers, they’re not sure where to begin. I will be posting some suggested setups at different price points — starting with this post trying to put together a system for under $500 (including cables). Audio is one of those areas where you can always spend more, and in most cases, the incremental increase in cost will be accompanied by an incremental increase in sound quality (though not always). As I put together these proposed combinations, I will use the following guidelines whenever possible: (1) the ability to purchase from a single retailer; (2) best total cost; and (3) matching components (at least on the lower end systems — more for aesthetics than any perceived synergy achieved by using the same brand). That said, here’s the sub-$500 setup:
Receiver: The Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver for $194.00 with free shipping and handling from Amazon.com. I have an earlier model of this same receiver, and have found the sound quality to be comparable my higher end receivers by Denon and Harman Kardon.
Speakers: The Polk Audio RTi4 High Performance Bookshelf/On-Wall Speakers (Pair, Black) are still available from J&R through Amazon for $149.99 with free shipping and handling. I wrote about these last week and they are still available. (NO LONGER AVAILABLE AT THIS PRICE 2/23/10)
CD/DVD Player: The Onkyo DV-SP406B Single Disc DVD Player (Black) is available from Amazon for $121.82 with free shipping and handling. This is a fairly entry level player, and won’t play blu-rays or Super Audio CD (SACD), but sound quality should be more than adequate with this system.
Speaker Cables: Monster Cable THX SP 16-50 Standard THX-Certified Speaker Cable (50 Feet) is $23.41 with free shipping and handling at Amazon.com. Nothing special about this cable. Good quality. At this price, no banana connectors (just bare wire), but this will do the job.
Interconnect cables: Not much left to spend, but you can get the Phoenix Gold Audio Signal Cable 1 Meter for $8.98 with free shipping and handling from Amazon. Or you can save $9 and use the interconnect included with the DVD/CD player.
GRAND TOTAL: $498.20
Next up, a $1,000 system.
