Amazon has the Marantz BD7004 Universal Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) for $399.99 with free shipping and handling. That’s in line with the new retail pricing for this model, which previously sold for twice as much (and which is still being sold for the old retail price elsewhere). This player received a 5 out of 5 star review from What Hi Fi?

As its daily deal for 7/6, Amazon has the Klipsch CS-500 2.1 Home Theater System with DVD Player for $199.99 with free shipping and handling. That’s a drop of $100 from the sale price Amazon has been running for the last month, and $800 below MSRP. I was on the fence about whether to post this product when it was $300, but at $200 it’s a pretty good bargain. Some of the reviews at Amazon complained of problems with the DVD portion of the unit, but Klipsch (as of late May 2010) (in the comments to the reviews) has indicated that it has upgraded the DVD mechanism to address such issues (including all units in stock at Amazon).

Spearit Sound (via Amazon) has the NAD – T-515 Universal DVD/CD Player for $149 with free shipping and handling. That’s $250 below retail and the lowest price available for this now discontinued unit. The industry move to blu-ray provides an opportunity to buy a highly regarded dvd/cd player from NAD. It earned 5/5 stars in a review at TechRadar.

Spearit Sound (via Amazon) has the NAD Viso Five DVD/CD Surround Sound Reciever (refurbished) for $1,149 with free shipping and handling. That’s $650 below the lowest price available for a new, sealed-box unit. It carries a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. While this unit lacks a blu-ray player, it has received excellent marks for both video and sound quality. Check out the 5-star review from What Hi Fi? and the excellent review by audio ideas guide.

Spearit Sound (via Amazon) has the NAD Viso Two Stereo DVD/CD Receiver (refurbished) for $899 with free shipping and handling. That’s $400 below the price for a new, sealed-box unit. The Viso Two is a combination stereo receiver and cd/dvd player (similar to the Viso Five, but without surround sound). This model received a 5-star review from What Hi Fi? You can read more about it (and find specifications and additional images) at the NAD website.

Cos Cob TV & Audio (via Amazon) has the Denon ADV-M71 Integrated Progressive-Scan DVD Player and 2.1-Channel Amplifier for $399.99 $299.99 $249.99 plus $10.49 shipping and handling. It’s the only place I could find a new in box (i.e., not refurbished) version of this now discontinued model. This unit sold for $599 when it was introduced circa 2003. It received an excellent review from Gramophone at the time. No blu-ray capability, but this would make a nice office or bedroom system paired with some good bookshelf speakers (perhaps the Jamo C401 2-way cherry color Concert series bookshelf speaker pair which are still selling for $79.88 with free S&H).

6ave.com has the Denon DVD-3910 Universal DVD/SACD player for $398 with free shipping and handling. This player has received rave reviews from Audioholics, Sound+Vision, and Audiophile Audition. This retailed for $1,500 originally, and although unable to play blu-ray discs, it is still a top notch audio and dvd player.

Newegg.com has lowered its price on the Polk Audio SurroundBar 360 DVD Theater System to $249.99 with free shipping and handling (use coupon code “AUDIO3265″ get this price)(coupon expires 3/31/10). Cnet rated it 3.5 (out of 5) stars in its March, 2009 review. There’s another decent review (3 our of 4 stars) at bigpicturebigsound.com. This originally retailed for close to $1200.
For those of you seeking cutting edge video performance, this probably isn’t for you — there are no HDMI inputs, and the unit doesn’t play blu-ray discs (just DVD and CD). Be sure to read the cnet review and product description so you know what you are (and aren’t) getting. That said, it’s a pretty nice self contained receiver, dvd/cd player, and speaker system. I’ve had polk speakers for 24 years (and purchased another set in 2003) and have always been pleased with them.

6ave.com has the Hewlett Packard Z558 Windows Media Center for $281.03 with free shipping and handling (with coupon “BONUSBUY”). This discontinued product originally retailed for $2,199, and the only other vendor still listing it for sale has a price on it over $800. Note that this is technology from circa 2006 — no hdmi and processor isn’t anything like you would find in a system today (definitely not state of the art for 2010). That said, it can work as a dvr, music streamer, dvd burner, has 600 gb of storage, wi fi, trackball remote and wireless keyboard. The case is pretty slick too (modders out there could probably swap out the motherboard to improve processing power and RAM). At this price, it might be a fun toy to add to a second system.

Amazon.com has the recently released OPPO BDP-80 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD and DVD-Audio (Black) in stock for $289.99 with free shipping and handling. There isn’t a better price out there. The OPPO disc players have received uniformly positive feedback for both video and sound quality (as well as their ability to handle sound only formats such as SACD and DVD-Audio). This is a step down from the BDP-83 model (which goes for $499), but it promises to have almost the same level of performance at a far lower price.

Amazon has the Yamaha DVD-S1800BL 1080p Upconverting DVD SACD Player for $79.99 with free shipping and handling. Many of the reviewers on Amazon praise the sound quality of this unit when used as a CD player. It sold for close to retail of $249 until about six months ago, when it was discontinued in favor of newer blu-ray models. Amazon seems to have the last of these in stock, and is selling them for a bargain price. It has some good audio processing on-board: Four two-channel Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit audio DACs and an “Audio Direct” mode.

J&R Music World has the Onkyo CS-V720 Micro Audio System with DVD CD Player for $349 with free shipping and handling. That just edges out B&H Photo Video‘s price by $0.99 (another recent price drop). Aside from B&H, it’s $35 better than the next lowest price I could find, and the lowest price I’ve ever seen on this unit. There’s a nice review at Cnet which describes the features and performance of this model.

Onecall.com has the Denon S-102 2.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System for $379.77 with free shipping and handling. That’s the best price I could find by at least $20, and significantly below it’s retail price of $1,000. As DVD is becoming “old” technology (and everyone is moving to Blu-Ray), it’s creating some very attractive bargains for those who don’t care about having the next hot thing. This is a high quality setup which would be great just for music.
