Vann’s (via Amazon Marketplace) has the Klipsch XF48 2-Way Black Icon X-Series Floorstanding Speaker – Price per Speaker for $399.88 each ($799.76 per pair) with free shipping and handling. That’s 50% less than the next closest price, and 68% off of suggested retail. This is an ACTIVE speaker, i.e, it does not need separate amplification. The amps are built into the speakers, and line level signals can be sent directly to the speakers. I don’t think anyone knew how to sell these at the price points Klipsch proposed, so now there is an opportunity to get a nice piece of equipment cheap. Think of all the money you’ll save by not having to buy a separate receiver or amplifier. These could, for instance, be used as the sweetest set of ipod/mp3 player speakers ever (same if hooked up to your pc). Originally, they were envisioned to stand alongside flat panel video screens which lacked amplication — it would still work for that as well. Before you write this speaker off, check out the review in Sound and Vision magazine. This really is a the best type of bargain — a good product that the manufacturer just couldn’t figure out how to sell.

That’s at least 50% below the price for a new, sealed-box unit. This speaker set forgoes a subwoofer in favor of a two-way design (many computer speakers omit a tweeter and use only a “full range” driver). These have received favorable reviews from IGN, Guitar Stuff, and Trusted Reviews, among others.
